The "Intercollegiate Challenge Cup" was presented in 1906 to the Sydney University Sports Union by Admiral Sir Harry Rawson, GCB, KCIG, Governor of NSW (1902-1909). The cup is awarded annually to the college obtaining the greatest number of points in intercollegiate sport.
Sir Harry Rawson was a most lovable governor and threw himself wholeheartedly into the life of the state. He was an avid supporter of all sport and attended all the sporting fixtures that official duties allowed him. Trophies bearing his name are to be found at Sydney Grammar School, the University Regiment and the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. The Rawson Cup was valued at £150 in 1958.

The challenge principle was held to be still preserved in that the college holding the cup had to be defeated on points to relinquish it. In 1960 and 1978, when St Andrew's and St Paul's were equal on points, St Andrew's retained the cup although both names were inscribed on it. The award of the cup is considered valid even if all the sports are not contested, such as in 1946 when rowing and shooting were not contested.
During the two world wars there were self imposed restrictions on college sports and so the award of the Rawson Cup during those years was discontinued, although some informal sport did take place.
